Simple, elegant mittens, a staple item for your winter outerwear. These mittens are knit with 100% wool, making them perfect to keep your hands warm in the cold weather.

Even though these mittens are knit with worsted weight yarn, they knit up quickly. Making them the perfect knitting project for a weekend.

For this mitten pattern I used Briggs & Little Regal yarn in the colour Fundy Fog

Riselay Mitten Pattern

Notes:

  • This pattern is written in the size women’s medium
  • Finished length of the mitten is about 9″ including the brim
  • The length of the brim is about 2″
  • Knit in the round using 12″ 5mm circular needles or 5mm double pointed needles
  • intermediate level knit
  • Need to know how to backwards loop cast on

Material

  • Briggs & Little Regal yarn (lvl 4) in your choice of colour (you can substitute for another lvl 4 yarn that is 100% wool)
  • 12″ 5mm circular knitting needles. If you do not have this size circular knitting needle, you can use double pointed needles.
  • stitch markers

Abbreviations

  • K: knit
  • P: Purl
  • PM: place marker
  • K2tog: Knit two together
  • Sts: stitches
  • **: Repeat stitches within

Gauge

4″x4″ square in stockinette

18 st/ 4″ | 27 rows/ 4″

Yardage

~132 yards for both mittens

Mitten Pattern Adult size medium

Left Mitten – Medium

Cast on 32 stitches. Join in the round (unless using double pointed needles, then instead of joining evenly space out stitches on 3 needles)

Rows 1-15: k1, p1 

Row 16-17: knit 

Row 18: *(k3, p1)* 4 times, knit until 1 stitch remains, place marker, k1

Row 19: knit until place marker, slip pm, M1R, k1, M1L (34 sts)

Row 20: knit

Row 21: k1, p1, *(k3, p1)* 3 times, knit

Row 22: knit until pm, slip pm, M1R, k3, M1L (36 sts)

Row 23: knit 

Row 24: *(k3, p1)* 4 times, knit remaining stitches

Row 25: knit until pm, slip pm, M1R, k5, M1L (38 sts)

Row 26: knit

Row 27: k1, p1, *(k3, p1)* 3 times, knit until pm, place 7 stitches on stitch holder, backwards loop cast on 5 stitches (36 sts)

Row 28-29: knit

Row 30: *(k3, p1)* 4 times, knit remaining stitches

Row 31-32: knit

Row 33: k1, p1. *(k3, p1) 3 times, knit remaining stitches 

Row 34-51: repeat rows 28-33 (3 more times)

Row 52-53: knit 

Row 54: repeat row 30

55-56: knit

Decrease rounds – if using 12″ circular needle; switch to double pointed needles when needed.

57: *(k4, k2tog)* (30 sts)

58:knit

59: *(k3,k2tog)* (24 sts)

60: knit

61: *(k2, k2tog)* (18 sts)

62: knit

63: *(k2tog)* (9 sts)

Cut a long tail, weave through remaining stitches on the needles, remove needles, cinch closed and weave in ends

Right Mitten 

Cast on 32 stitches. Join in the round (unless using double pointed needles, then instead of joining evenly space out stitches on 3 needles)

Rows 1-15: k1, p1 

Row 16-17: knit 

Row 18: *(k3, p1)* 4 times, place marker, knit the remaining stitches

Row 19: knit until place marker, slip pm, M1R, k1, M1L, knit the remaining stitches (34 sts)

Row 20: knit

Row 21: k1, p1, *(k3, p1)* 3 times, knit

Row 22: knit until pm, slip pm, M1R, k3, M1L, knit the remaining stitches (36 sts)

Row 23: knit 

Row 24: *(k3, p1)* 4 times, knit remaining stitches

Row 25: knit until pm, slip pm, M1R, k5, M1L, knit the remaining stitches (38 sts)

Row 26: knit

Row 27: k1, p1, *(k3, p1)* 3 times, knit until pm, place 7 stitches on stitch holder, backwards loop cast on 5 stitches, knit the remaining stitches (36 sts)

Row 28-29: knit

Row 30: *(k3, p1)* 4 times, knit remaining stitches

Row 31-32: knit

Row 33: k1, p1. *(k3, p1) 3 times, knit remaining stitches 

Row 34-51: repeat rows 28-33 (3 more times)

Row 52-53: knit 

Row 54: repeat row 30

55-56: knit

Decrease rounds– if using 12″ circular needle; switch to double pointed needles when needed.

57: *(k4, k2tog)* (30 sts)

58:knit

59: *(k3,k2tog)* (24 sts)

60: knit

61: *(k2, k2tog)* (18 sts)

62: knit

63: *(k2tog)* (9 sts)

Cut a long tail, weave through remaining stitches on the needles, remove needles, cinch closed and weave in ends

Thumbs – same for each glove

Pick up 7 stitches from the stitch holder, pick up 1 stitch in the left side, pick up 5 stitches across the top of the hole, pick up 1 stitch on the right side. 

Row 1-15: knit

Row 16: *(k2 tog)* (7 sts)

Cut a long tail, weave through remaining stitches on the needles, remove needles, cinch closed and weave in ends and close holes around thumb and thumb gusset

    I just finished both mittens and they end up as both left mittens. Please advise as I followed the patterns as written.
    Lovely pattern, but it would sure be nice to know how to make the right mitten.
